Nate Dodge Explores the Benefits of Online Landscape Design
Starting a landscape design company in January 2020 brought more challenges than I anticipated. In the end, it gave me a chance to explore online services that I will continue to use for years to come. Offering online design services can help other companies stay relevant in this new era of business. Here’s why:
Expanded Reach
Your reach is not limited to local and regional clients; you can work with national and international clients when meetings and consultations are conducted online rather than in-person. I have been able to expand my client base further than I imagined.

Better Client Engagement
Clients are more relaxed, engaged and collaborative when meeting online, which makes for a better creative process. There is more room for creativity when people feel comfortable and at ease.
Easier Presentations
Rather than huddling around a table, craning our necks around a shared device, clients are projected directly into my online studio space. Screen sharing online allows everyone to be up-close with their design solutions and imagery without compromise. Clients feel more connected to the design process. Digital live sketching and editing open a world of brainstorming; edits and adjustments happen in real-time.

Streamlined Scheduling
When clients have direct access to my online scheduler and calendar, they have increased accessibility to services, from those needing basic hourly consultations to those requiring the full spectrum of landscape design and rendering services.
Zero-risk Meetings
Meeting online offers zero risk, as health and safety concerns are ongoing. Many people are still unable to access the world in a “let’s get back to normal” capacity due to these risks.
Less Environmental Impact
Online landscape design produces less paper, less printing and less road time and air travel, creating a greener methodology. Instead of commuting to the site, sitting in traffic and dealing with travel delays, I can funnel that time back into my clients and their projects. In addition to helping the planet, it saves time, money and resources.
Remote services are a solid framework, not only for business owners but for the future of the industry itself. The online landscape design process is for anyone with an internet connection and a sense of adventure.
